Hey there, fellow Earthlings! Ivette here, your dietista nutricionista from beautiful Spain.
As an educator and a deeply passionate advocate for Mother Earth, I often find myself looking around at our modern world
with a mix of awe and, well, a good bit of frustration.
The constant hum of traffic, the endless stream of products, the sheer volume of “stuff” we consume and discard – it can feel like we’ve built a noisy, polluting, and consumer-driven reality that’s a million miles away from how we’re truly meant to live.
And honestly, it hits particularly close to home when I visit places like Salinas beach with my partner. It’s beautiful, but seeing people leave behind trash or light up cigarettes where it’s clearly not allowed, polluting the air and leaving their butts in the sand… it’s truly disheartening.
But what if I told you that by looking back, way back, we can find some incredible wisdom to help us move forward?
When Humans Lived More Aligned
Imagine a time, long, long ago, right here on Earth – even in places like ancient Mexico, and all across the globe. There were no grocery stores, no cars, no smart phones. People lived as hunters and gatherers.
Can you picture it? Their lives revolved around a deep understanding of their environment, a connection to nature that many of us can only dream of today.
The hunters, often the men, were masters of their land. They didn’t just chase animals; they understood their patterns, their habitats, and their role in the ecosystem. Every part of an animal they hunted was valued and utilized – not just for food, but for clothing, tools, and shelter. Nothing was wasted.
The gatherers, typically women and children, were the ultimate natural nutritionists and botanists! They possessed an incredible knowledge of plants: which berries were safe and nourishing, which roots offered vital energy, and which leaves could heal.
They knew the seasons, the cycles of growth, and where to find nature’s bounty. They were literally walking encyclopedias of Mother Earth’s pantry!
These were not static lives. These early humans were constantly moving, following the flow of nature, living in harmony with the changing seasons and the migration of animals. Their homes were temporary shelters, designed to leave no lasting mark on the land they passed through.
The Authentic Connection to Mother Earth
Here’s the truly profound part: these ancestors had an unbreakable bond with what they called Mother Earth. To them, the Earth wasn’t just a resource; it was a living, breathing entity that provided everything they needed for survival. This wasn’t just a belief system; it was a way of life, ingrained in every action.
They lived by a simple, yet powerful, principle: take only what you need, and waste nothing. If they harvested plants, they left enough for the plants to thrive and continue growing. If they hunted, they honored the animal and ensured every part was used respectfully. There was no concept of “trash” as we know it today; everything eventually returned to the earth, completing a beautiful, natural cycle.
Compare that to our modern habits. Our consumerism – the constant drive to buy more, acquire more, upgrade more – has led us to a place where vast amounts of waste are generated daily. Our industrial processes often lead to pollution of our air, water, and soil. We’ve largely forgotten the ancient wisdom of reciprocity with nature.
Reconnecting for a Healthier Future
As a dietista nutricionista, I see how this disconnect from Mother Earth impacts not just our planet, but our own health and well-being.
Our food systems are globalized, often prioritizing quantity over quality, and convenience over sustainability. We’re bombarded with processed foods that bear little resemblance to the whole, natural foods our ancestors thrived on.
But here’s the good news: we can learn so much from our hunter-gatherer roots! We can start by:
Eating Seasonally and Locally: Connect with the rhythm of nature by choosing foods that are in season and grown close to home.
Minimizing Waste: Be mindful of what you buy, reuse what you can, and compost your organic waste.
Valuing Resources: Treat every item you own, from your clothes to your food, as a precious resource, just as our ancestors did.
Spending Time in Nature: Reconnect with Mother Earth by simply being present in natural environments. Feel the grass, listen to the birds, breathe the fresh air.
Living an “Earth-conscious” life isn’t about going back to caves, but about integrating ancient wisdom into our modern lives.
It’s about recognizing that our health and the health of our planet are intrinsically linked. It’s about being an active participant in caring for our world.
This summer, my partner and I are committing to spending at least 10 minutes picking up plastic every time we visit Salinas beach, as an act of solidarity with the ocean for everything it provides us.
It’s a small step, but it’s a commitment to action.
We are all Mother Earth loving Earthlings, and we each have the power to create a more harmonious, less noisy, and truly nourishing reality.
