We focus on prevention
¡Hola, mis amigas! Ivette here, your nutritionist, embracing the long-term beauty of Asturias!
Today, let’s talk about the incredible power of a clear vision—not just for our dreams, but for our health. Many of us want to be healthier
but the goals we set feel too big and overwhelming.
This is where we need to remember a key truth: prevention is the most powerful form of medicine. My work as a nutritionist is centered on this idea. We focus on prevention, not treatment, because living a high-quality, vibrant life is always the better, cheaper option.
I learned this truth early in my life. During my junior and senior years of high school, I volunteered with a program called Communities Against Alcohol and Drugs.
We educated young teens about the effects of tobacco. We spoke about the damage it causes, but also about the incredible freedom and quality of life you gain by never starting.
We knew that if we could prevent a 15-year-old from ever picking up a cigarette, we were giving them a gift beyond measure—a lifetime of health, and the money to spend on things they loved instead of an expensive, harmful habit.
This is where SMART goals come in...
Nutrition works the same way. We don’t have to wait for a diagnosis to start making changes. Instead, we can create a life of prevention. My role is to guide you, but you, are always at the center of your journey. This is where SMART goals come in, giving us a clear map to follow.
Sofia’s Journey: From Vague Hopes to Lasting Habits
I had a client, let’s call her Sofia, who felt overwhelmed. Her goal was “to be healthier,” which is a wonderful intention, but it’s not a plan. So, together, we broke it down into small, strategic, and most importantly, achievable steps using the SMART framework. Let’s take a look.
Work SMART not hard
Specific: Instead of “eat healthier,” she chose a very specific action: “I will add one serving of green vegetables to my dinner.”
Measurable: Instead of “walk more,” she made it measurable: “I will walk for 20 minutes after dinner, four times a week.”
Achievable: These goals were small enough that they didn’t feel like a burden. They fit into her life without causing stress.
Relevant: These actions directly connected to her desire to feel better and prevent future health issues.
Time-Bound: We set a timeline: “I will do this for the next two weeks.”
The magic happened not just because of the goals, but because Sofia succeeded.
This gave her confidence and built momentum. She wasn’t just losing weight; she was preventing future health problems by stabilizing her blood sugar, lowering inflammation, and strengthening her heart.
Every small action was a powerful act of prevention.
My work isn’t about treating an illness; it’s about giving you the tools to create a life where you feel so good, you don’t have to.
When we focus on the small, manageable changes—the preventative steps—we are investing in a higher quality of life that is priceless.
