¡Hola, amigas bellas! Ivette here, your nutritionist, sending you sunshine from the beautiful region of Asturias!

Today, let’s talk about something fascinating and incredibly important for our health as women: our gut microbiota – that bustling community of trillions of tiny organisms living in our digestive system!

Think of it as your very own inner garden, and just like any garden, it thrives when we give it the right nourishment.

Working hard to keep us healthy and happy

Science is constantly revealing the amazing ways our gut microbiota influences our overall well-being, and it’s particularly relevant for us women.

These tiny inhabitants play a huge role in everything from our digestion and nutrient absorption

to our immune system and even our mood! It’s like having a tiny community inside us, working hard to keep us healthy and happy.

So, how do we naturally feed this incredible inner garden? The key lies in what we eat!

Think of it as providing the right kind of soil and sunshine for those beneficial microbes to flourish.

Remember, WE are nature (Thank you, Mother nature).

Special types of fiber?

One of the best ways is through prebiotics. These are special types of fiber that our bodies can’t digest

but they act as food for our good gut bacteria.

Imagine them as the fertilizer for your inner garden! You can find prebiotics in delicious foods

like garlic, onions, leeks (which grow beautifully here in Asturias!), asparagus, oats, and even slightly unripe bananas.

Then we have probiotics

Then we have probiotics, which are live beneficial bacteria found in certain foods.

Think of them as adding more helpful gardeners to your inner team!

Natural sources of probiotics include fermented foods like yogurt with live and active cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi

and even some types of traditional Spanish cheeses, like queso Cabrales.

Biodiversity in our guts

Eating a diverse range of plant-based foods is also crucial. Just like a garden thrives with biodiversity or variety

our gut microbiota benefits from a wide array of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Each type of plant food contains different types of fiber and compounds that feed different kinds of beneficial bacteria

creating a balanced and thriving ecosystem within us. Think of it as offering a diverse buffet for your tiny tenants!

For us women, a healthy gut microbiota can be particularly supportive. Research suggests it plays a role in hormonal balance, vaginal health

and even reducing the risk of certain conditions. It’s like having an extra layer of support for our unique biological needs.

So, whether you’re enjoying some local Asturian cider (in moderation!) which contains beneficial compounds

or adding more garlic and onions to your cooking, remember you’re nurturing your inner garden

and supporting your overall health from the inside out.

Let’s cultivate a happy gut, mujeres, for a happier and healthier you!

And always with Mother Earth in mind.
